Downtown Cohoes Historic District

The Downtown Cohoes Historic District takes up 35 acres of the City. Many of the 165 contributing properties date from the 1820-1930 period when the Erie Canal and Harmony Mills were the mainstay of the city's economy. It was recognized as a historic district and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

In 2017 the City was awarded several grants to improve the downtown area and multiple areas throughout the City. To see a list of awarded grants click the link below.

Historic National Bank Building converted into The Cohoes Music Hall

Downtown was mostly built out by the start of the 20th century, but there are still some notable bank buildings from that period in the contemporary Classical Revival style. The National Bank Building on Remsen Street was converted into our Cohoes Music Hall.

The Cohoes Music Hall hosts a multitude of events all year long, such as concerts, dance performances, plays and comedy shows. To see upcoming events, purchase tickets and learn more about the Cohoes Music Hall click on the link below to visit their website.

Cohoes Visitor Center

The Cohoes Visitor Center re-opened on Saturday 18, 2019 with new and renovated exhibits that feature an Interactive Map, Cohoes Falls- A Short Story, Harmony Mill Power System, Mill Worker Audio Stories, Lock 38, A Day In The Life of Cohoes and Canal Lock Experience.

The Cohoes Visitor Center is located at 58 Remsen Street and is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tours are given by appointment only (518-237-0078).

On the last Wednesday of the month, the Center is open for a Spindle City Historic Society meeting from 6:45 p.m. until 8 p.m.
